The first Macedonians in Australia

The first Macedonians arrived in Australia in the late nineteenth century, fleeing economic hardship and political turmoil in their homeland. Many of these early settlers found work in the country’s burgeoning mining and agricultural industries. In the years following World War II, a significant number of Macedonians came to Australia as refugees or displaced persons. These new arrivals were often housed in migrant camps, such as those at Bonegilla and Broadmeadows

Today, the Macedonian community in Australia is estimated to be around 100,000 people, if not more. The majority of Macedonians living in Australia reside in Melbourne, followed by Sydney and Perth.
